The
Sphagnum subsecundum
is the species that gives the name to the sub-generic taxonomic
category (Section) to which belong also the Sphagnum
auriculatum and the
S. platyphyllum. This
is a medium-small size Sphagnum species, capable of very rapid
growth, but particularly demanding in terms of temperature and light. The
best growth conditions will occur in autumn and early spring. It
needs a lot of light, otherwise it will have growth problems, and it
will produce thin yellowish seedlings. It
tolerates well different levels of humidity: from brief periods of
light humidity of the substrate (empty saucer but wet soil), to
months of immersion. In fact, in nature it grows in peat bogs subject
to periodic flooding. When it is submerged the plants grow lush
forming long filaments, which once emerged will start producing heads
on the water surface.
